The present film and television landscape is littered with based-ons, inspired-bys, and drawn-froms. We’re talking remakes. They seem to arrive monthly, spurred on by the tested formula of their predecessors, and they leave some us sighing, “What about something different?” Well, Netflix’s Ripley demonstrates that a remake can still excite if presented in an inventive way. This fresh version of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 The Talented Mr. Ripley stars Andrew Scott, who takes a different approach to Tom Ripley than Matt Damon did in 1999. Scott is calculating, but the intent behind his actions is not wholly revealed. He’s covert, a manner that is complemented by the decision to shoot Ripley in black and white. The movie is noir and the story is old, but the way it’s told is brand new. —Jack Sullivan
