Richard Avedon: Portfolios

Sept 9 – Nov 13, 2019
13 Carlos Pl, Mayfair, London W1K 2EU, UK

It was the photographer Richard Avedon who transformed the fashion “sitting” into a “shoot,” his imagery caught on the wing. It happened in the 1950s, when his main muse was the incomparable redhead Suzy Parker. Spontaneity, movement, energy, flow, it was all about a kinetic now. Decades later, when Avedon rediscovered 27 original engraver plates from those historic collaborations (complete with marks, stamps, and notes), he gathered them into the portfolio Made in France. Paired with another Avedon portfolio, a more conscious history of fashion called La Passante du Siècle, both are exhibited for the first time in their entirety. At Hamiltons. —L.J.
