“This may be the most personal show Silverman has ever made,” writes Brian Logan, The Guardian’s comedy critic, “but perhaps the best way to describe it is a synthesis of the comic she was and the comic she’s becoming.” The Silverman in question is the American comedian Sarah Silverman, 54, who is now is touring a new show in the U.K., Postmortem, ahead of its Netflix debut on May 20. Her subject is the loss of her beloved father and stepmother, who both died two years ago. “I was living in their apartment and taking care of them,” says Silverman. “So when I went back to standup, the material I tried out was stolen from my eulogy at my dad’s funeral.” As ever, she pushes the boundaries with daring and inappropriate jokes—but this time, she’s also bringing emotion. —Jeanne Malle
