The photographer Richard Ansett and the artist Grayson Perry have a lot in common, beginning with their tongue-in-cheek approach to things. Ansett understands his subjects intimately and tries to capture the world through their perspective. His images are bold, unforgiving, and edgy. Perry, too, is bold, unforgiving, and edgy. Ten years ago the two became friends, and Ansett has since photographed Perry in pink wigs, exuberant makeup, and dressed as a doll, an American beauty, and the angel of death. The centerpiece of this show at Sotheby’s is a portrait that marks Perry’s 65th birthday, taken at the Wallace Collection for his exhibition there, which opens in tandem with this one. —Elena Clavarino
