Heidi Horten’s life was defined by beauty. When the Austrian philanthropist died in June of 2022, her jewelry collection numbered over 700 objects: among these were the Sunrise Ruby, the world’s most valuable non-diamond gemstone, and the Briolette of India, a 90.38-carat colorless diamond. And just nine days before her death, Horton had opened an eponymous museum to house her art collection, which includes works by Jean Dubuffet, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, and Marc Chagall. She was a South of France staple. Slim Aarons captured her lunching at her modernist Villa Dubueau—“Guests started arriving by boat and car,” he wrote. “How chic some of the women look in their Emilio Pucci silk shirts.” This exhibition celebrates France and Midi (as the Côte d’Azur was known) as a breeding ground for artistic talent. —Elena Clavarino
