In the early 18th century, Canaletto’s reputation as an expert landscape artist was growing. By chance, the 4th Duke of Bedford met Joseph Smith, Canaletto’s agent in Venice, and commissioned paintings of the city’s landmarks. Canaletto set to work on what became his largest series—23 paintings completed over nine years. Some time later, his nephew Bernardo Bellotto took a position as court painter to August III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. For many years Bellotto remained in his uncle’s long shadow, but his panoramic and finely detailed landscapes have grown in stature and won admiration. At the Kunsthistorisches, paintings of Venice, London, and Vienna by uncle and nephew—two masters of landscape—come together. —Elena Clavarino
