Ray Harryhausen: Titan of Cinema

Dec 1, 2020 – Sept 5, 2021
73 Belford Rd, Edinburgh EH4 3DS, United Kingdom

Jason and the Argonauts (1963)—once seen, never forgotten. Why? Ray Harryhausen’s special effects: the bronze colossus, Triton emerging from the sea, the Harpies, the skeletons with swords, the gleaming golden fleece. This exhibition presents Harryhausen as the man who elevated stop-motion animation to an art. Mighty Joe Young, the Sinbad films, Mysterious Island, One Million Years B.C. Harryhausen’s work on these movies influenced directors you may know of: Tim Burton, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg. Sketches and storyboards show Harryhausen’s process, his Dynamation technique is explained, and models of his creatures are here for close viewing: Medusa, the Kraken, and, of course, those soldier skeletons. —L.J.
