The Sony World Photography Awards is one of the largest and most prestigious contests in the world of photography. So when the 2023 winner of the Creative category—a German artist named Boris Eldagsen—revealed he had conjured his photograph using A.I., the art community responded with anger, confusion, and unease. A larger conversation was launched, one that questioned the ethics of A.I.-generated images and then looked at their place in the art world. A new exhibition at Palmer Gallery delves into the discomfort around A.I. images while also demonstrating the unique possibilities of the technology. —Paulina Prosnitz
