This beautifully paced virtual exhibition looks at 13 paintings by Philip Guston, works made from 1971 to 1976. They are hung in three rooms titled “The Solace of the Past,” “The Rising Tide,” and “Deliverance.” Each room has its own short video, narrated by Guston’s daughter, Musa Mayer, president of the Guston Foundation. Eloquently she explains her father’s mood and the meanings in the paintings. Guston was at a point where “feeling” was guiding his hand. As he says in an interview clip, “What you’re left with are your feelings, itches, urges, compulsions. Talking about art’s very funny. It’s a cliche expression, like, how you feel. Well I’m afraid it’s that. It’s how you feel that day, that week.” What was Guston feeling during these years? Something universal: What we are left with, what endures, is love. —L.J.
