New Yorkers are used to seeing the Paul Taylor company in a big theater. That’s great for the few works of his that benefit from a panoramic view, but Taylor is not principally a scenic choreographer. He is kinesthetic. You feel the movement in your muscles and along the spine, which is where the drama begins, too. Or at least you do at the 450-seat Joyce Theater, where artistic director Michael Novak has inaugurated a short summer season. The Joyce’s modest stage means the engagement favors pieces from the 1960s and 70s, when the troupe was smaller, as were the casts, and the dances stranger, more arresting and mysterious than what would come later. Indeed, there is not a single clinker among the seven works, on two distinct programs, this summer at the Joyce. —Apollinaire Scherr
