The painter Orazio Gentileschi (1563–1639), father of Artemisia Gentileschi, was transformed after meeting the younger painter Caravaggio in 1600. Both were living in Rome, but Caravaggio was making waves with his dramatic use of light and shadow. Gentileschi followed his lead; but when Caravaggio left the city after a libel suit, Gentileschi returned to the softer Tuscan lyricism of his earlier years. He moved to Genoa in 1621, at the invitation of Cardinal Giovanni Antonio Sauli. He then moved to Paris to work for Marie de’ Medici, and finally to England, where he painted for the Duke of Buckingham. This exhibition traces Gentileschi’s remarkable life through his art. —Elena Clavarino
