“I have always been interested in the ways that different groups of people view one another,” says the artist Nathaniel Mary Quinn, “how they internalize their own identities, how others perceive them, and how their own self-perceptions are physically expressed.” Quinn’s collage portraits—executed in oil paint, charcoal, gouache, oil stick, pastel, and gold leaf—can be read as surrealism, expressionism. The faces, distorted by the effects of collage, disturb our equilibrium, drawing us into a realm of uncertainty and exploration. —E.C.
