Nathan Oliveira: Figural Variants

Apr 1 – May 8, 2021
540 Ramona St, Palo Alto, CA 94301, United States

The California artist Nathan Oliveira (1928–2010) was known for his fierce individualism. Although he came of age during the 1940s and 50s, when Abstract Expressionism held sway, he was associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement and never strayed from figurative work. “I am an abstract painter who finds the figure,” he once explained. Oliveira made portraits of solitary people and worked often with live models. He caught the line, the physicality, letting it drift into abstraction while keeping hold of its human truth. This exhibition presents paintings, sculptures, and prints from the last decades of Oliveira’s career, 1975 to 2007. —E.C.
