Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919–2021) was a true polymath: a poet, painter, and co-founder of the renowned City Lights Booksellers & Publishers, in San Francisco. His life got off to a rocky start. Ferlinghetti’s father, Carlo, died of a heart attack months before he was born. His mother, Clemence Albertine, was committed to a mental hospital shortly after. He lived with his aunt for a while, then bounced between foster homes. Still, Ferlinghetti went on to earn multiple degrees, wrote poems that “tell little stories, make pictures,” and, in 1951, founded the bookstore. He painted for over 60 years, showing his art in galleries and museums across the country. He was also a draftsman and a printmaker. This exhibition explores that often-overlooked facet of his pratice. —Elena Clavarino
