Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca: Legacy of Our Dreams

Noche Flamenca

July 29 – Aug 10, 2025
175 8th Ave, New York, NY 10011, USA

Noche Flamenca delivers, year after year. To be specific, the soul-baring of the lead dancer, Soledad Barrio, the troupe’s reason for being, is always searing and always unostentatiously so. The musicians—on guitar and cajón, with keening voice— have been working alongside Barrio for long enough that together they serve as a single finely-tuned instrument of feeling. Director Martin Santangelo’s staging is so elegant that the dancing doesn’t seem staged at all but simply to unfold—solos after duos after trios, with raucous ensemble numbers to start things out and finish them off. And this year, even the premiere looks a bit familiar. Legacy of Our Dreams continues where last year’s critically acclaimed Searching for Goya left off—with the Spaniard’s paintings and etchings rendered as tableaux before the performers break into motion. What is new is the inclusion of emerging talents, whom Barrio has specially trained: a tacit admission that the 61-year-old is not immortal. Alas. —Apollinaire Scherr
