The Arts Intel Report

Napoli Eden

In 2018, the Neapolitan artist Annalaura di Luggo set out to create four monumental sculptures in recycled aluminum. The idea was to use repurposed materials to send Naples a message about environmental protection. Once created, the works were placed in four symbolic locations. To help with her sculptures, di Luggo enlisted children from the Spanish Quarters—one of the poorest areas in Naples. She hoped that a meaningful extracurricular activity would keep them off the streets. Two years hence, she has created a documentary that chronicles her experience. Focused on an Italian city that is frequently misconstrued and undervalued, it touches upon ethical and cultural rebirth, social inclusion and redemption. —E.C.
