American television mysteries can feel like cultural appropriation. They’re too loud and smiling, the days too sunny onscreen and the actors too good-looking and warm. That’s why cozy mysteries belong to the Brits alone. Adding to the nation’s repertoire of whodunits (a list as long as a CVS receipt) is a new Britbox TV show called Death Valley. It stars the ever-grimacing Timothy Spall as the actor John Chapel—the retired star of a popular detective television show—and the young Gwyneth Keyworth as Detective Sergeant Janie Mallowan. The two make unlikely crime-solving partners but together they solve the mystery in six episodes (binge-worthy over a rainy weekend). —Carolina de Armas
