“Meet Nathan,” reads the movie poster for Novocaine. “He can’t feel pain.” Played by Jack Quaid, whose parents are Dennis Quaid and the actress Meg Ryan, Nathan’s problem is physical—he has “congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis,” or C.I.P.A. It’s a real disease that renders Nathan impervious to punches, car accidents, and boiling oil, all of which make appearances in this film. Novocaine is a love story between Nathan and Sherry Margrave (Amber Midthunder), who is kidnapped by bank robbers dressed as Santa Claus. We never find out if the thieves get coal in their stockings, but we do learn that some people aren’t who they seem. And not even C.I.P.A. can numb a broken heart. —Jack Sullivan
