The cathedral is Canterbury, the victim is Thomas à Becket, venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Roman and the Anglican churches. The libretto follows T. S. Eliot’s verse drama, a manifesto of individual conscience in opposition to authority, written during the rise of fascism. All too seldom heard, the score has ardent champions. —M.G.
