Mothership: Esther Pearl Watson

Sept 4–22, 2019
21 Herald St, London E2 6JT, UK

No, your children can’t do this. Admittedly there is a childlike imagination alive in the work of Esther Pearl Watson, a naiveté that brings delight. Those trees made of green circles, the pink flying saucers, the Gumby-like limbs of people wearing shorts. Small-town Texas looms large in Watson’s work, along with the colorful myth-making of such communities. But even larger is the powerful isolation of wide, flat, open space and sky. —L.J.
