Lorna Simpson: Source Notes

May 19 – Nov 2, 2025
1000 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA

“The notion of fragmentation, especially of the body, is prevalent in our culture, and it’s reflected in my works,” says the multi-media artist Lorna Simpson. “We’re fragmented not only in terms of how society regulates our bodies but in the way we think about ourselves.” Simpson’s collages nod to Cubism and Surrealism but use imagery from African-American visual culture. This exhibition of more than 30 works zooms in on Simpson’s output from the last 10 years. Highlights include major paintings from her Venice Biennale debut, in 2015, and works from her recent series “Special Characters.” —Elena Clavarino
