Joan Miró and Henri Matisse are not often grouped together. Born in Barcelona in 1893, Miró was often allied with Surrealism. Matisse, who was born in Northern France in 1869, was considered a Fauvist. Nonetheless, the two artists admired each other. And both loved color. In “Mirómatisse. Beyond Images,” the art historian Rémi Labrusse analyzes the relationship between these two artists, beginning with their mutual rejection of Western visual standards and moving on to the ways they stimulated each other creatively. —Zack Hauptman
