Metamorphosis of the Figure

Pablo Picasso, Crouching Nude, 1961.

Until June 30
Via Tortona, 56, 20144 Milano MI, Italy

“There is neither past nor future in art,” Picasso said. “If a work of art cannot always live in the present, it has no meaning.” This exhibition, curated by Ricardo Ostalé and Malén Gual (the author of 1917: Picasso in Barcelona), looks at Picasso’s entire career and the way it was constantly re-energized by new artistic sources, particularly sources described as “primitive”—Neolithic and Proto-Iberian art, Oceanic art, Ancient Egyptian and African art. Over 40 works of painting and sculpture, and 26 drawings and sketches from the artist’s invaluable Notebook No. 7, embody the transpositions, disproportionate volumes, and continuous metamorphosis that Picasso brought to his figures. In the process, he not only revolutionized art—he changed the way we think about beauty. —Isabella Carter
