Max Ernst went through many stages. He aspired to be a psychiatrist and philosopher, but in 1910 he pivoted to painting at the University of Bonn. Postwar disillusionment had him heading toward Dada and its irreverence; then he moved to Paris in 1922 and joined the growing circle of Surrealists. In 1925, Ernst experimented with the techniques of frottage and decalcomania. When the Germans occupied France, he escaped in 1941 with the heiress Peggy Guggenheim, who became his third wife. While Ernst was creating art, traveling, and socializing, many friends took photographs of him. This exhibition tells his story with 150 of those pictures. One particularly evocative image sees him in Sedona, Arizona, posing amid his sculpture group Capricorn with Dorothea Tanning, his fourth wife. —Elena Clavarino
