Isabelle Huppert is Mary, Queen of Scots. In a captivating solo performance that premiered in 2019 at the Théâtre de la Ville, in Paris, she reflects on the tragedies of her life—her childhood in France, her failed marriages, and the loss of her son—on the eve of her execution. Accused of treason, she steadfastly maintains her innocence, even as the shadow of her impending doom draws nearer, increasingly consuming her thoughts. Based on a collection of letters written by Mary Stuart in the 16th century, Darryl Pinckney’s play is equal parts disquieting, poetic, humorous, and brilliant. “It’s delivered like a piece of baroque music,” Sarah Hemming wrote in the Financial Times. “It’s impressive, opaque, uncompromising.” Directed and designed by the incomparable Robert Wilson, this is the latest presentation from the Van Cleef & Arpels “Dance Reflections” series. —Jeanne Malle
