Marina Abramović: Seven Deaths

Sept 14 – Oct 17, 2021
27 Bell St, Marylebone, London NW1 5BY, United Kingdom

Suffering, brutality, force, death—the Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović is attracted to dark themes. In this exhibition, she has created sculptures to honor her chosen soul sister, the Greek diva Maria Callas, who is also the subject of an operatic performance piece in which Abramović is touring, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas. One of the great sopranos of the 20th century, Callas’s career required her to die onstage in countless operas (La Traviata, Lucia di Lammermoor, Norma, etc.) In seven sculptures milled from single blocks of alabaster, Abramović has encapsulated photorealist fantasias on these deaths. An accompanying videowork is on view at the gallery’s Lisson Street location. —E.C.
