Apartheid may be over, but colonialism’s poisonous legacy lives on in South Africa. The artist Lungiswa Gqunta, born in Cape Town, has spent much of her career addressing that legacy. Her installations, assemblages, videos, and works on paper explore the meanings of home and the traditions intrinsic to Black communities. This exhibition presents three installations. Zinodaka examines the faith and belief systems of Gqunta’s ancestors. Ntabamanzi is a reaction to white brutality against Black aquatic spiritual practices. And Gathering, a work from 2019, looks at the domestic act of folding, a tradition for Black mothers on Sunday afternoons. —Elena Clavarino
