Bill Forsyth’s 1983 comedy-drama Local Hero was an immediate hit. Starring Peter Riegert, the film focuses on “Mac” MacIntyre, a 1980s oil executive sent from Texas to rural Scotland with $30 million to purchase oceanfront land for a refinery. MacIntyre is ready to pay off locals to turn the town into a money-making machine, and the locals are ready to cash out—all except one. Scottish playwright David Greig’s stage adaptation, which premiered in 2019, is heading to West Sussex. Lyrics are by Mark Knopfler, the former guitarist, singer, and songwriter for Dire Straits. —Jensen Davis
