Bill Forsyth’s 1983 comedy-drama Local Hero was an immediate hit. Starring Peter Riegert, the film focuses on “Mac” MacIntyre, a 1980s oil executive sent from Texas to rural Scotland with $30 million to purchase oceanfront land for a refinery. MacIntyre is ready to pay off locals to turn the town into a money-making machine, and the locals are ready to cash out—all except one. Scottish playwright David Greig’s stage adaptation, which premiered in 2019, is heading to West Sussex.
