“We’re gonna be rich … filthy dirty rich!” This line comes to have an unexpected significance in Local Hero, a new musical based on the hit 1980s Hollywood film of the same name. The story tells of a boisterous Texas oil executive on an unexpected moral pilgrimage. A Masterati? A million dollars? What is life in a sleepy coastal community in Scotland worth? The answer—and how to reach it—is more complicated than anyone expects. Directed by John Crowley (Brooklyn, The Goldfinch), musical adaptation by Bill Forsyth and David Greig (Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax), with music and songs by former Dire Straights frontman Mark Knopfler. —B.A.
