Lauren Bon—Concrete is Fluid

Lauren Bon, Venus, 2023.

Sept 14 – Dec 14, 2024
2622 La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90034

Lauren Bon, now 62, has impressive credentials. She trained as a dancer with the earthbound eminences of modern dance—including that mistress of the chthonic, Martha Graham. She was a personal assistant to the artist Isamu Noguchi. And she holds a masters in architecture from M.I.T. This woman knows about the seasons, the soil, the subterranean. All these mediums come together in Bon’s environmental art, which focuses on the metabolism of our world, the chemical cycles that keep life going. Bon is perhaps most known for her 32-acre cornfield in downtown L.A., titled Not a Cornfield (2005). Her latest exhibition of earthworks, photographs, sculptures, and room-scale installations—“Concrete is Fluid”—looks to concrete, which never completely dries, as a conceptual touchstone. Bon’s interest, she said in 2020, is “in the world as a stage.” —Laura Jacobs
