Back in 1997, when the American artist Laura Owens was just 27 years old, she painted black birds flying over a seascape, an image reminiscent of Van Gogh’s Wheatfield with Crows (1890). The painting was one of her first breakthroughs, and it now hangs in the Whitney Museum of American Art. Over a decade later, beginning in 2012, Owens began painting with dramatic impasto, echoing the texture of some of Van Gogh’s best known works, and in 2020, she moved to Arles, where Van Gogh once lived, to study his work and that of Winifred How, an English designer he admired. The results of her research are on view in this exhibition. Paintings, wall reliefs, and sculptures by Owens speak to seven paintings by Van Gogh. —E.C.
