Night after night, the artist Izzy Barber makes her way to the same spots in Chinatown, where she paints outdoors, in the dark. Indeed, she taught herself to paint in the dark while sitting in a booth at her local bar in Queens. You could say that Barber studies the architecture of New York City nightlife. Her oil paintings capture a moody, hazy world of liquored pinks, purples and browns—and a piercing nostalgia for the shadows and neon of locales now shuttered. —E.C.
