At the start of the war in Ukraine, the Metropolitan Opera canceled the Russian-born, naturalized-Austrian soprano Anna Netrebko because of her all-purpose pacifist response to the conflict, which the Met’s general manager Peter Gelb deemed insufficiently anti-Putin. Other major companies took the same tack. That said, Netrebko’s services have been sorely missed, and of late, some have relented. In September, reportedly in resplendent voice, she opened the new season at London’s Royal Ballet and Opera as Tosca and was cheered to the rafters. (Protests, such as they were, took place outside.) Now, look for Netrebko in Zurich as Leonora, the noblewoman who turns hermit in Verdi’s Spanish tragedy La Forza del Destino. Yusif Eyvazov sings Don Alvaro, an Inca prince traveling incognito, whose loaded pistol, flung to the floor in the opera’s opening scene, is the instrument whereby Destiny asserts its dreadful power; not until the final scene of the opera will Alvaro and Leonora’s paths cross again. Formerly married, Eyvazov and Netrebko remain on amicable professional terms, but their reunion in Zurich is limited to the first half of the Forza run. Elena Guseva and Riccardo Massi, estimable artists unknown to the tabloids, take over starting November 21. No price break on tickets, but at least there’s availability.
