This month, Air Mail contributing editor Cloé Perrone guest curated the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro’s 2019 cycle of the Project Rooms, where she brought together the work of Sophia al-Maria, Rebecca Ackroyd, and Caroline Mesquita. All three of these young artists make sculptures, yet none consider themselves to be sculptors. Rather, the work of each inhabits the category-defying space where sculpture is the medium, not the result. In the case of French artist Caroline Mesquita, this approach takes the form of theatrical sculptural installations into which she herself sometimes enters. —J.V.
