From 1981 to 1987, Karin Kneffel attended the Kunstakademie, in Dusseldorf, where she studied under the artist Gerhard Richter. Kneffel’s paintings show the influence of Richter, his blurring of mediums. She also, similarly, manipulates moments in time through layering and erasure. “My interest in making art is to produce a sense of doubt,” she has said, “something not yet really grasped.” Often, Kneffel creates works that explore objects symbolizing fertility—apples, breasts, rosy cheeks. Recently, she’s been painting 15th– and 16th–century Madonna statues, concentrating on the heads. This exhibition presents her recent “Madonna” series. —Elena Clavarino
