The acclaimed American artist Julian Schnabel, known for his paintings and his pajamas, once called Jorge Galindo “absolutely the best painter in Spain.” The two men forged a friendship in 1991, when Schnabel was teaching a workshop at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. They influence each other, and share an affinity for experimentation. This exhibition reunites the pair for the first time since 2011, in a survey of recent paintings that sees each artist taking flowers as their subject. From Galinda, blown-up postcards serve as the backdrops for still lifes that are highly modern yet inflected with the compositional style of the Dutch masters. Schnabel’s series, “Victory,” titled for the defeat of President Trump in November 2020, was inspired by the beach roses found along the driveway of his Montauk home. —C.J.F.
