The Lebanese-American tenor Karim Sulayman is a seeker on roads less traveled. His sunny, mellow sound and interpretative finesse lend themselves to repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to the here and now. His debut recital album, the Renaissance anthology Songs of Orpheus (2018), garnered a Grammy for Best Classical Solo Recording; his subsequent Schubert recital Where Only Stars Can Hear Us (2020) made its debut in the #1 spot on both the Billboard Traditional Classical and iTunes Classical charts. His erotically charged performance in David T. Little’s prize-winning monodrama What Belongs to You marked another career highlight. BBC Music Magazine praises his “lucid, velvety tenor and pop-star charisma.” Sulayman’s Zankel Hall program, with Tom Poster at the piano, examines French song from many periods, in many styles, creating adjacencies between the likes of Jacques Brel and the mononymous Barbara on the one hand and Bizet, Hahn, and Poulenc on the other. —Matthew Gurewitsch
