Eva Gonzalès was Édouard Manet’s only pupil. He taught her, painted her, and championed her work, but she has remained largely in his shadow ever since. Though often grouped with Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, Gonzalès never exhibited with the Impressionists, preferring the official Paris Salon. In 1883, shortly after Manet’s death, her career was cut short at 36, when she died just days after giving birth to a boy. Now, for the first time, the Petit Palais is devoting a major retrospective to her work, bringing together nearly 100 paintings, pastels, and prints. In February 2027, the exhibition travels to the Van Gogh Museum, in Amsterdam. —Elena Clavarino
