Jelena Bulajíc rose to fame for the hyperrealistic portrait paintings she created with a mixture of marble dust and ground limestone. The unique concoction reflects her unique fixation with the medium. Bulajíc’s latest works continue this tradition in a new form: she’s recreating important historical paintings such as Antoine Vollon’s Mound of Butter (1875–85) and Francisco de Zurbarán’s Agnus Dei (1635–40), but in her monochromatic style. These replications maintain Bulajíc’s reputation as the “mistress of the inquisition.” Analyzing the very meaning of an artist’s control, she both confuses and delights the viewer. —Lucy Horowitz
