In his adaptation of Tennessee Williams’s 1944 drama, Jay Miller does not stray from its haunting beauty and stark discomforts. Tom Wingfield, an aspiring poet, narrates the story of his troubled family—his fragile sister, Laura, who tends to her glass figurines and clings to the hope of marriage; his hidebound and overbearing mother, Amanda; and his own growing burden as the family’s reluctant provider after his father’s departure. When a gentleman caller (Jim O’Connor) comes to their home for dinner, tensions come to a head. The production, which layers memory and illusion, light and darkness, has been called “exquisite.” —Jeanne Malle
