In 2006, the Birmingham-based painter Hurvin Anderson stumbled upon a barbershop in his hometown. He decided to paint it in his characteristic style, with bold block color and strong lines. Anderson has continually returned there during the last 15 years, reworking the same subject matter, shifting from figuration to abstraction and from landscape painting to portraiture. In this exhibition, his barbershop paintings are on view, alongside works by artists who have influenced Anderson—Michael Andrews, Francis Bacon, Leon Kossoff, and many more. —Elena Clavarino
