Picasso: Tête-à-Tête

“You see me here, and yet I’ve already changed,” said Pablo Picasso in 1963. “I’m already elsewhere.” The quote captures the spirit of his sprawling oeuvre—so varied and monumental it’s often hard to believe it came from a single artist. This exhibition, opening at the Gagosian flagship on Madison Avenue, explores yet another facet of Picasso’s legacy. Curated by his daughter, Paloma Picasso, the show brings together 50 paintings, sculptures, and drawings, some of them never before exhibited and others out of circulation for decades. “Showing my father’s work as he wanted it to be seen, in conversation across subjects and periods,” says Paloma, “is a fitting tribute to his legacy.” —Elena Clavarino
