How I Learned to Drive

Apr 22 – June 7, 2020
261 W 47th St, New York, NY 10036

In a 2018 reprint of her 1997 play How I Learned to Drive, Paula Vogel writes in the foreword that during its first run, some people “could not come see my play in such an intimate space as an off-Broadway theater.” The close proximity redoubled the claustrophobia of the story, which describes an incestuous relationship between a teenage girl and her uncle. Such a troubling subject was all the more complicated in Vogel’s work, where the twists of the sexual relationship are tightened by surprising and confusing tenderness. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play now premieres on Broadway, in an expanded space that nonetheless retains the necessary tautness, and it stars the original and acclaimed leads, Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse. —C.J.F.
