When we think of land art we usually think of men: Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer, Walter De Maria, Richard Long. But there was also Agnes Denes, who in May 1982 created a wheat field along the entirety of Manhattan’s Financial District. And Jody Pinto, whose Fingerspan connects two cliffs with a slim steel bridge in the shape of a bent finger. And Ana Mendieta, whose “earth-body” art saw her placing female silhouettes made of mud, sand, and grass in natural settings. This exhibition celebrates the female pioneers of land art, whose careers ran parallel to their better-known male counterparts. —Elena Clavarino
