Germane Barnes uses architecture to explore the connection between race and physical structures. “We get this one Eurocentric idea of what architecture is supposed to be,” he has said. “Shelter has been around since the dawn of time, and you’re trying to tell me that sub-Saharan places or South American places don’t have material culture when it comes to architecture?” In an exhibition that focuses on how environments impact Black domesticity, 10 new works by Barnes are on view. The selection includes two woven tapestries that function as maps, three pieces of furniture, and several two-dimensional works. —Jensen Davis
