Dianna Yessenia Alvarado, the youngest artist featured in Funk You Too!, takes her inspiration from old Disney cartoons. “I would find myself laughing in the studio thinking about these characters,” she says. “They are made from a curious, playful place and bring out similar feelings of nostalgia.” Alvarado and her contemporaries are building on the legacy of the Funk art movement, which began on the West Coast during the intense political disillusionment and anti-war fervor of the 1960s. Deploying humor and irreverence, Funk artists subverted establishment ideals by questioning what qualifies as “good art.” Bringing together 50 exuberant and satirical Funk ceramics that date from the movement’s origins to today, Funk You Too! shows how sculpture can powerfully—and playfully—spark dialogue around social and political issues. —Nyla Gilstrap
