The star has emerged as a persistent motif in the long and prolific career of Frank Stella. Perhaps inspired by his family name—stella is the Italian word for “star”—the American artist has manipulated this familiar form time and again. Unlike the many abstract subjects Stella invented, his stars represent something recognizable that viewers can trace throughout his oeuvre. Encompassing everything from miniature wire works to monumental outdoor sculptures, this exhibition illuminates Stella’s range within the parameters of one dynamic symbol. —Sabina Vitale
