It’s hard to find an upbringing more unique than Uman’s. Born in Somalia in 1980, raised in Kenya and Denmark, and now residing in the valleys of upstate New York, Uman’s multicultural life has helped shape her art, which draws from sources as disparate as Arabic calligraphy and styles inspired by 19th-century French artists. Uman’s practice moves across many mediums and is marked by animated colors and prismatic composition. Her paintings are abstract and transcendent. This exhibition at the Aldrich debuts her recent work, which includes paintings, video, and a site-specific mural. —Charlie St John
