In 2019, National Geographic came out with the brilliant three-part travel series, Fiennes: Return to the Nile. The premise was simple: Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the eminent British explorer and writer, retraced the course of his 1969 expedition along the Nile river (hence “return”), this time accompanied by his third cousin, the actor Joseph Fiennes. As the duo investigated the history and culture of the region, Ranulph served as a sort of teacher and guide to the younger Joseph. The show was a success and has led to the sequel, Fiennes: Return to the Wild. Ranulph, now 80, is battling Parkinson’s disease, a struggle very much present during the pair’s adventure into the Canadian tundra. While Return to the Wild is indeed informative (in the vein of other nature-adventure programs), it allows Ranulph to reminisce on his remarkable life and career, and to bond with Joseph over their shared love of the natural world. —Jack Sullivan
