The Milanese sculptor, painter, and poet Fausto Melotti, born in 1901, came of age during W.W. I. At first drawn to physics and mathematics, he then turned to art, gravitating toward abstraction. After W.W. II, Melotti began a search for serenity, channeling the Renaissance principles of harmony and geometry. He created mesmerizing figures in terracotta before moving on to fragile dramas constructed from thin sheets of iron and brass. Melotti loved the theater and created beguiling little teatrini, or miniature set designs. This exhibition gathers together drawings, sculptures, and mixed-media works that explore Melotti’s delicately surreal sense of time and place. —E.C.
